Lyrics
We’ve come to today through hard work and chains
We lift up our hearts but blood falls like rain
We’ve come through today to horror and pain

And once we had life in the palm of our hands
But we held on too tight and it fell through like sand
Let’s hope that tommorrow we better undestand

Left on the shores of Neverland
Gone too far on the seas to find the land
Hope somehow we’re get our ships back in flight
But for now we’re lost in an eternal night

Hope and pray someday we’ll find out if life somehow has meaning
The way to Heaven requires a bit of dreaming, not only through the ceiling
Someday we’ll find out meaning some way

The road to success is bumpy with rocks
With more than its share of low blows and hard knocks
But you don’t always find happiness at the top

And once we had life in the palm of our hands
But it was taken from us, givin to a better man
He may lose it too if he doesn’t understand

Left on the shores of Neverland
Gone too far on the seas to find the land
Hope somehow we’re get our ships back in flight
But for now we’re lost in an eternal night

Hope and pray someday we’ll find out if life somehow has meaning
The way to Heaven requires a bit of dreaming, not only through the ceiling
Someday we’ll find out meaning some way

Left on the shores of Neverland
Gone too far on the seas to find the land
But somehow we’re get our ships back in flight
But for now we’re lost in an eternal night

Hope and pray someday we’ll find out if life somehow has meaning
The way to Heaven requires a bit of dreaming
Someday we’ll find out if life somehow has meaning
The way to Heaven requires a bit of dreaming, not only through the ceiling
Someday we’ll find out meaning some way

Analysis: The best song from the early years of 1987-88. A philosophical lyric shared by two “voices”, guides the driving acoustic guitars, which were added in 1990 to the original 1988 all-electric recording, which is laid bare during the odd yet entertaining guitar lead.

Lyrics
Free, free, off to the sea
World’s apart, yet together forever
It’s driving me crazy

I can’t believe such a worldly land has such a simple heart
But judging from here I think its clear that rattlesnakes never fart
I can’t conceive a journey, man, or at least a weekend trip
But far beyond the Silicon we’ll mingle lip-to-lip

Now free, free, off to the sea
World’s apart, yet together forever

A purple tree in daisy land once told me secret horrors
But if I could, I surely would take sides with the flowers
I’d like to ski on blue-green snow and catch an evening rain
But afterall I still won’t fall, ’cause I am now insane

And free, free, off to the sea
World’s apart, yet together forever
It’s driving me crazy

Analysis: This is the very first recording I made with drums. I literally took them out of their boxes, set them up, turned on the recorder and played the beats. All other instruments were dubbed in later to make a proper “song” of it, complete with pysechedelic lyrics.

The Deer With the Golden Eye

1988
Lyrics
Sundown, only light, no sound
Another long-lost day never found
Shot down, don’t believe no foolish clown
He’ll go away until he hears a special sound

Building and searching for more…

Rotten town, I’ve got to get out tonight
I’ll turn to brown if I don’t shout, alright!
You keep me here and feed me the beer
You say that I like
You go away until you need a special favor
You’re all my life is not about
You give me reasons, more reasons for me to break out

And went I get time away from home
I wander back to the place I used to roam
And there I find the deer with the golden eye
He sees all, but only when he really tries
And there is a fox who stalks the briar patch
But all he found was the egg that wouldn’t hatch
So far from home, an eagle soars alone
Her bird’s eye view can’t find the golden key to the throne

Hideaway, come find me today, some way
You’ll take me in if I have no sins to pay, okay?

Sundown, only light, no sound
Another long-lost day never found
Shot down, don’t believe no foolish clown
He’ll go away until he hears a special sound
Oh no, gotta go
Although I’ve tried so hard to make it right
It just hasn’t worked out so far
For the deer with the golden eye, just now has to say goodbye
“Goodbye”

Analysis: A true hybrid of a song, with the electric guitars, vocals, and harpsichord recorded in 1988 and the acoustics, bass, drums, and some vocal overdubs done in 1990. It was all mixed together in 2004, for a unique, journey of a song which comes full circle.

Speak to Me

[audio:WAS/07-SpeakToMe.mp3]
1988
Lyrics
Foxy people enter the contest
While fifty-eight right hand men perpetrate
Speak to me, baby
Oh, I should’ve known it would turn out like this

Alone in the night, a sectional cross-bar
Just to shame the illiterates
Speak to me, baby
Oh, I should’ve known it would turn out like this

The taxi driver they call “McGuiver”
Is selling flames upon the Charleston blitz
Speak to me, baby
Oh, I should’ve known it would turn out like this

Against the cloud, while well endowed
My heart, my soul, my brain, my sane, and a cracklin’ glitz
Speak to me, baby
Oh, I should’ve known it would turn out like this, like this

Sinclair Soul will take over from here…

Analysis: Heavily influenced by Pink Floyd (who also had a song called “Speak to Me”), this song is like a space-age communication, first between two guitars, then between two distinct vocals, Ric and “Sinclair Soul”.

A Lot of These Things

Lyrics
I found a lot of these words I was looking for
After I felt all the freedom of an open door
Yes, just a second chance helped me believe it
Now I do anything

I saw a lot of these things in your starry eyes
They helped me to get a grip and to realize
Yes, just a second chance helped me believe it
Now I do the rain dance

How can I refuse? I need no more to lose
I think that I have paid my dues, I’ve got to go home

On the edge of the farm by the stream there the red fern grows
It gives me the hope to rebound when the cold wind blows
Just need to improvise, adapt, and overcome
All of these trivial lies

How can I refuse? I need no more to lose
I think that I have paid my dues, I’ve got to go home

Now on the edge of the farm, there the red fern grows
It gives me the hope to rebound when the cold wind blows
Just need to improvise, adapt, and overcome
All of these trivial lies

How can I refuse? I need no more to lose
I think that I have paid my dues, I’ve got to go home

Analysis: This is actually the oldest recording of the regular collection. It was composed and recorded late at night out of boredom, which is evident in the hushed (almost whispered) vocals and directly plugged guitars with no breath or presence whatsoever. It is also an early example of the “Ricter”, an electronic sampling of a guitar fed through anad played with sampling keyboard. Although not highly regarded at the time, this song has cme to symbolize the best of the early experimental stuff in the “evolution of noise”.
